We are excited to be launching in Warrington in January 2026, thanks to support from Sellafield Ltd, Amentum, Mott Macdonald and Cavendish Nuclear! We can't wait to transform more children's futures with one-to-one online reading support at the time they need it most.

Why Warrington?

We've chosen to launch in Warrington because it presents both significant need for literacy support and strong potential for local business engagement.

The borough has a diverse socio-economic landscape with notable educational disparities. Several central wards - including Bewsey and Whitecross, Fairfield and Howley, Latchford East, Orford, and Poplars and Hulme - rank among the most deprived areas nationally for education, skills and training. This challenge is reflected across the borough's schools: 22 out of 49 primary schools have more than 25% of pupils eligible for Free School Meals, a key indicator of household deprivation.

Supporting Warrington's vision

Our work directly supports Warrington Borough Council's strategic priorities of reducing inequalities, creating opportunities for all residents, and ensuring access to quality education and skills development. By partnering with local schools and businesses, we're helping to build a stronger foundation for the borough's youngest learners.

Stuart McCourt, Education, Community and Development Lead at Sellafield Ltd commented: "We know from the Chapter One rollout in West Cumbria how much of a difference the programme makes to the children taking part as our volunteers can see them grow in confidence week by week. A key part of our social impact strategy is around working collectively to achieve a greater impact and being part of the partnership that brought the programme to Warrington is a great example of that."

Luke Richardson, Head of Social Value at Amentum, said: “We’re proud to see Chapter One launching in Warrington, thanks to a shared commitment with Sellafield Ltd and partners to support local children. As part of this community, and as a driving force behind making this happen, we’ve seen the incredible impact Chapter One has in helping young readers grow in confidence and opening doors for their future. That’s why we’ve championed bringing this important initiative to Warrington.”

Marc Goodwin, Senior Project Manager at Mott MacDonald, added: "I'm delighted that Mott MacDonald is able to further its relationship with Chapter One and support the expansion into Warrington. Our teams who are based in Warrington have been supporting a school in Cumbria this year, and they have absolutely loved it. This has helped us spread our work with Chapter One through our supply chain in the North West, including AXIOM, a joint design venture between ourselves, Amentum and Assytem. With the addition of the Warrington opportunity, I'm sure word will spread and more of our people will get engaged to make a real difference. Raising attainment in literacy in this way also builds connections between young people and businesses like ours, so hopefully they'll keep connected with what we do, and become part of our future workforce."
