Chapter One and your child - reflecting on a year of reading success
How did our online reading volunteers support your child this year?
Throughout this school year, the Chapter One Online Reading Volunteers Programme connected your child with a dedicated volunteer from one of our partner companies. These companies provided funding for the programme whilst giving their staff the opportunity to make a real difference to children's reading during their working week.
- For the whole school year, your child was matched with a volunteer who provided consistent, personalised reading support tailored to their individual needs.
- Your child's volunteer received comprehensive training, including safeguarding, and underwent an Enhanced DBS (if your child is in England) or PVG (if your child is in Scotland) check (criminal background) to ensure your child's safety and wellbeing throughout the programme.
- Your child enjoyed weekly 30-minute reading sessions online via our secure Chapter One reading platform. Their volunteer used our specialist platform and a phone connection to link to the classroom laptop. With no video - just audio - your child felt comfortable and focused purely on their reading journey.
- Your child enjoyed a range of stories and literacy activities, designed to be fun and engaging, helping them to develop their phonics skills, reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary in an enjoyable way.
Our evaluation and research data show that Chapter One pupils like your child have not only increased their reading attainment but have also gained confidence and discovered a love for reading!

What your child achieved throughout the year:
September-November: Building foundations
Your child was carefully matched with their volunteer and began their reading journey! During these early months, they built a strong relationship with their volunteer and started developing crucial reading skills in a supportive, encouraging environment.
November-January: Making connections
Your child participated in our Virtual Meet and Greet Events, where they had the exciting opportunity to see their volunteer for the first time and connect outside their regular reading sessions. These special events, facilitated by our Chapter One Programme Managers, helped strengthen the bond between your child and their volunteer.

Throughout the year: Growing in confidence
Week by week, your child's reading skills flourished. They tackled new stories, expanded their vocabulary, improved their phonics knowledge, and most importantly, grew in confidence. Their volunteer celebrated every milestone along the way, helping to foster a genuine love for reading.
June-July: Celebrating success
Your child's year of reading culminated in our Year-End Reading Celebrations. Whether in-person at school or virtually, your child had the chance to celebrate their incredible progress with their volunteer. They received an activity book and a Certificate of Reading Success - a well-deserved recognition of all their hard work and achievement throughout the year.

The lasting impact
Thanks to the dedication of their Chapter One volunteer and your child's own efforts, they finish this school year as a more confident, enthusiastic reader. The skills they've developed and the love for reading they've discovered will continue to benefit them throughout their educational journey and beyond.

It all starts with literacy.
